KPI methodology

IGREENGrid KPI methodology closely linked to EEGI roadmap

IGREENGrid KPIs have been determined using a methodology based on EEGI roadmap.

KPIs are used to quantify and compare the benefits of a smart grid solution.

1. How benefits are evaluated

For IGREENGrid project, the quantifiable benefits can be evaluated from a technical and economical point of view.

a) Technical benefits

The overall approach to evaluate the technical benefits of one specific smart grids solution is based on the comparison between two scenarios:

  • The Research and Innovation Scenario (R&I) corresponding to a solution under test;
  • The Business as Usual Scenario (BAU) corresponding to a situation when the solution is not operative, as if it had never been installed.

For both scenarios, the benefit of the solution regarding a technical aspect is calculated.

The KPI is calculated as the difference between the benefit calculated in this two situations. It represents the added value of the smart grid solution.

b) Economical benefits

As the technical, the economical benefits are evaluated using a Cost Benefits Analysis. This analysis takes into account :

  • The variance between prototyping and large‑scale development of the solutions;
  • Application of the smart grid solution on large part of the distribution network;
  • The increasing evolution of the loads and the expected integration of DRES.

2. How KPIs are selected from EEGI list

EEGI roadmap provides a wide list of KPIs linked to the challenges that the current European grids are facing. Three different types of KPIs were created depending on what they evaluate.

From this classification, IGREENGrid team have withhelded some second level KPIs related to the main objective of the project: the massive integration of DRES in the distribution system without jeopardizing the quality of the supply.

These KPIs are classified according to their relevance in evaluating the benefits in terms of DRES integration.

Two main categories have been proposed:

  • The first category indicators: they capture the most important technical aspects related to the integration of DRES in the distribution network;
  • The second category indicators: they represent the evaluation regarding additional goals that are also fundamental requirements for the achievement of the first category objectives.

The definitons of these indicators are detailled here in order to explain to which technical requirement they are linked.
