Unión Fenosa Distribución (UFD) is a company fully owned by Gas Natural Fenosa, a leading international multiutility in the gas and power sectors which operates in 23 countries and has more than 20 million customersaround the world. It is the third bigger DSO of the Spanish Electricity Market, and its mission is to develop, maintain and operate HV/MV/LV facilities in order to deliver electricity to its market, whilst ensuring quality, safety, efficiency and demonstrating concern for the environment. UFD grid length reaches more than 125,000 km (11,000 km HV and 114,000 km MV&LV), with 335 primary substations (HV/MV) and 37,000 secondary substations (MV/LV). UFD grid installed capacity is 38,000 MVA; with 36,000 GWh delivered to more than 3 million supply points scattered across a market with a surface of approximately 81,000 km2.
As one of the main European DSOs, the most important research objectives of UFD are focused on the new control technologies for DER grid integration, as well as on a steady improvement of its service and business models to keep the leadership as DSO in a market with a high DER integration as the Spanish one.
UFD is involved in several projects directly related to solutions that increase the intelligence of distribution networks, and also leading others in order to get the experience and knowledge in deploying and managing intelligent transmission and distribution power systems like PRICE.
RWE Deutschland AG (RWE DAG) , is the operating company for electricity grids, gas and water supply, sales and energy efficiency in the RWE Group.
The company owns one of the largest distribution grids in Germany.
RWE Deutschland has subsidiaries for sales and distribution grid operation, grid services and gas storage facilities. Other owned companies pool the energy efficiency activities, including electro mobility, and the development and operation of smart systems metering energy consumption.
Energie AG Oberösterreich group (http://www.energieag.at) as the 100% owner of Energie AG Oberösterreich Netz GmbH (http://www.netzgmbh.at) has several business segments in field of supply and disposal of waste. In Austria and the neighbouring countries Czech Republik, Slovakia and Hungary Energie AG provides services on gas, water, sewerage, waste and telecommunication. In the field of electricity supply Energie AG in Upper Austria and Salzburg operates hydro and thermal power plants and a distribution grid (110 kV/10-30 kV/ 400 V) since 120 years. Actually 440,000 customers are connected to the electricity grid. As the settlement pattern over the area of 10,000 km² in Upper Austria is rather dispersed there are many over-head-lines (40% LV 65% MV) and long feeders in the LV grid.
As decentralized generation from renewable sources in Austria is well funded, the number of decentralized generation units has been increasing since almost ten years: additionally to 500 small hydro plants there are 24 MW wind power, 18 MW biomass and some thousands of PV systems in operation – numbers increasing. Therefore Energie AG has a lot of experience in connecting DG.
Traditionally innovation and cooperation with science and research at Energie AG is very important. In many technical solutions you will find Energie AG as a precursor in Austria and Europe - actually in the fields of grid monitoring, automating and metering. Energie AG Oberösterreich Netz is partner in several research and development projects related to smart grids.
Salzburg AG is the major energy and infrastructure service provider for the city and province of Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg AG is at the leading edge of energy innovation (smart grids, e-mobility, etc.) in Austria and has a longstanding experience in national and international (e.g. FP6-CONCERTO project “green solar cities”) research and development projects. The company is the leading partner in the Smart Grids Model Region Salzburg (SGMS) program awarded by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund. Within SGMS several smart grid solutions are developed and field tested in real-life demo projects.
The product portfolio of the multi utility covers electricity, natural gas, district heating, water supply, telecom services and mobility services. The group is organized in the three business fields.

Salzburg Netz GmbH (100% subsidiary of Salzburg AG) is the DSO for electricity and natural gas grid in the city and province of Salzburg. It provides reliable supply for 260,000 electricity and 34,000 natural gas grid customers. The company has comprehensive experience with grid integration of DRES, particularly small hydro power.
HEDNO S.Α (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) was established with the secession of the Distribution sector of PPC S.Α. It is a 100% subsidiary of PPC S.Α., however it is functionally and administratively independent, in compliance with all the requirements of independence incorporated in this legal framework. HEDNO’s responsibilities and tasks include the operation, maintenance and development of the electricity distribution network in Greece, as well as the assurance of a transparent and impartial access of consumers and of all network users in general, aiming at providing reliable power supply to our Customers, quality of electricity voltage and constant improvement of quality in services.
PPC S.A. operates in a liberalized market environment and is a fully vertically integrated company, covering the whole spectrum of activities in the electrical power field. It owns about 96% of the installed power capacity in Greece (12,695MW) generated from lignite, hydroelectric and oil stations, natural gas stations, as well as wind and solar energy parks. Approximately 61% of the total electricity is generated from lignite, making PPC the 2nd largest lignite-generated electricity producer in the E.U. It owns the national power transmission system of 11,400 km, as well as the power distribution network of 208,000 km and is power distribution company supplying electricity to 7.1 million customers over a network of 277 power stations. The Group has participated in several EU research funded projects: MORE CARE, IRED, MERGE, Smart House/SmartGrid.
Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) is Austria’s largest non-university research organization. AIT takes a leading position in the Austrian innovationsystem and a key role in Europe concentrating on infrastructure topics of the future. The company works closely with the related industry and public bodies in order to create additional benefits for them through innovation and new technologies.
AIT Department Energy (AIT Energy) has considerable research experience in the area of distributed energy generation integration into electric networks and has participated and led a number of national and international research projects. Scientific methods and competences can be listed as follows:
Numerical simulation of electricity networks on power system level for analysis, operation, management and planning of both distribution and transmission networks.
Real-time simulation for the interaction between the power system and selected network components using power-hardware-in-the-loop methods.
Development of simulation-based development tools for rapid-prototyping and model-based diagnosis of network components.
Tecnalia is a private, independent, non-profit research organisation resulting from the merger (1st January 2011) of eight research centers: Cidemco, European Software Institute, EUropean Virtual Engineering, Fatronik, Inasmet, Labein, Leia and Robotiker. Legally a Foundation, Tecnalia is the leading private and independent research and technology organisation in Spain and the fifth largest in Europe, employing 1,445 people (164 PhDs) and income of 118 Million € in 2011.
Tecnalia operates in the following market sectors: Industry and Transport, ICT, Sustainable Construction, Energy and Environment, Innovation Systems, and Health and Quality of Life. Tecnalia is very active in FP7, participating up to Dec-2012 in 295 projects and coordinating 68 of them. Tecnalia has a strong market orientation aiming at achieving major impacts in economic terms, by means of innovation and technological development. Tecnalia has taken part in several projects related with distributed generation, demand response, Smart Grids and the development of technological solutions. Among those R&D projects FP6 MoreMicrogrids & FENIX involving several demonstrators in different European countries and FP7 ADDRESS & EcoGrid EU with large scale demonstrators.
Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico – RSE SpA is an entirely publicly owned joint stock company, part of the GSE Group, and is supervised by the Italian Ministry for Economic Development. RSE develops applied research in the electricity/energy sector, focusing on all aspects of the production system, central and local public administration, associations, groups of small and medium-sized enterprises, and consumer associations. RSE performs research projects financed by the Italian Electricity System Research Fund and through Italian and European calls for funding proposals, as well as carrying out research, and providing advice and specialist services, for institutions and businesses.
RSE has a significant international presence and high success rate in the financing of European projects. It takes part in over thirty projects, and plays the role of coordinator in eight of them. Overall these projects involve over a hundred of the most important research centres and industrial organizations in the sector in Europe. RSE is also engaged in supporting the Italian Ministry for Economic Development in implementing the European Union Strategy Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan). In particular, RSE coordinates the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programme on Smart Grids and is actively involved in the Joint Programme on Carbon Capture and Storage. It is also active in the European Industrial Initiatives on Electricity Grids (EEGI) and Wind Power (EWI). RSE represents Italy at the International Energy Agency (IEA) for five Implementing Agreements, and chairs the ISGAN (International Smart Grid Action Network).
The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS/NTUA) is a private law body associated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (ICCS/NTUA). It was established in 1989 by the Ministry of Education in order to carry out several research and development activities in the fields of telecommunication systems and computer systems and their applications in a variety of topics, such as electric power systems. The Electric Energy Systems (EES) Laboratory of ICCS/NTUA has several activities in the field of Electric Power Systems and Distributed Generation, Renewable Energy Resources and Microgrids. More specifically EES, is involved in many EU projects as well as national and has a significant participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, journal publications. The group has built collaborations with other Universities, Research Institutes, utilities, companies and stakeholders originating in Greece and worldwide.
